In 2009, during the Delaware Academy of Medicine presidency of Barry Kayne, DDS, Delaware Mini Medical School was restarted after a several year break. Dr. Kayne was joined by Albert Rizzo, MD acting as the program chair of Delaware Mini Medical School.
The original overview and goals of Delaware Mini Medical School were “to offer this lecture series for adults of all ages and high school students to learn about important trends in medicine and health. Faculty will provide in-depth lectures on important issues and advances in medicine and research. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions after each lecture. There are no tests or grades. Participants who attend all six sessions will receive a Certificate of Achievement. No previous medical training is required.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should
be able to:
- Discuss ways the human body works
- Identify medical advances which have changed our understanding of disease and health
- Recognize where “cutting edge” medical research is headed.“
Early Mini Med sessions were held in both New Castle and Sussex Counties in conjunction with local hospitals and healthcare professionals.
In 2011, Delaware Mini Medical School welcomed ChristianaCare (then, Christiana Care Health System) as a long-term partner, and Mini Medical School found a home in the John H. Ammon Medical Education at the Stanton Campus of ChristianaCare.
